What are lab-grown diamonds?
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds—with the same brilliance, hardness, and chemical composition—but they are created in a controlled environment.
In short
A lab-grown diamond (also called a lab-created or synthetic diamond) is a diamond formed in a laboratory using technology that mimics natural growth processes. The result is a diamond that is optically, chemically, and physically identical to a natural diamond.
Important: a lab-grown diamond is not the same as cubic zirconia or moissanite (those are imitation stones).
How are lab-grown diamonds made?
There are two commonly used methods to create diamonds. Both produce real diamonds.
- HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature): replicates the extreme pressure and temperature found deep within the earth.
- CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition): builds the diamond layer by layer from carbon-rich gases.
The method used does not mean “better” or “worse”; it simply refers to the production process.
Are lab-grown diamonds “real”?
Yes. Lab-grown diamonds have the same crystal structure and the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale) as natural diamonds. They sparkle the same way and are just as suitable for everyday wear.
The main difference lies in the origin: formed in nature vs. created in a laboratory.
Difference from natural diamonds
- Origin: lab-grown diamonds are created in a controlled environment; natural diamonds form within the earth.
- Properties: the same hardness, brilliance, and durability.
- Identification: specialized equipment can detect growth characteristics.
What to look for when buying? (the 4Cs)
Just like natural diamonds, you look at: Carat (weight), Color, Clarity, and Cut. Together, these factors determine the diamond’s appearance and value.
At Perliara, you’ll find this information transparently listed in the product details.
Frequently asked questions
Do lab-grown diamonds last just as long?
Yes. Because they are real diamonds, they are just as durable and scratch-resistant as natural diamonds.
Is a lab-grown diamond the same as moissanite or cubic zirconia?
No. Moissanite and cubic zirconia are different materials (imitation stones). Lab-grown is a diamond.
